On this day 27 years ago a 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit Newcastle. 13 people died. 9 of the deaths occurred inside the Newcastle Workers Club. Three people were crushed to death under collapsed awnings on Beaumont Street Hamilton. 160 people were injured. 50,000 buildings were damaged - About 80% of these were homes.
